Ani Voskanian, 20 (Glendale, PD) |
The judge sentenced 21-year-old Ani Voskanian of Tujunga to three years of probation.
As part of probation, Voskanian must do 300 hours of community service, including talking to junior and senior high school students about the dangers of texting and driving.
She also is not allowed to use a cell phone while driving.
According to police, Voskanian was headed west on California Avenue about 6:37 p.m. on Sept. 15 when she failed to yield at the four-way stop at Columbus Avenue and hit 80-year-old Misak Ranjbar as he was in a crosswalk.
After being thrown into the air, Ranjbar landed on the pavement and Voskanian stopped shortly after the collision to remain at the scene, police said.
Ranjbar was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where he died of head trauma, coroner's officials said.
Family members says Ranjbar often walked around the neighborhood for exercise.
