LOS ANGELES -- A 17-year-old student from Agoura Hills is countering recent attacks against readheaded kids by hosting "Hug a Ginger Day."
Andrew Cohen, a senior at New Community Jewish High School, sent invitations for the hug-a-thon to his 500 friends on Facebook. They passed along the invite, and now more than 3,000 people are onboard to spread the love.
"Hug a Ginger Day" is set to take place on Dec. 8. On his invitation page, Cohen wrote, "In response to the hate of kick a ginger day around the nation, lets show 'em whose boss and have hug-a-ginger day!!!"
He also adds, "Make sure on December 8th you hug them early and often!"
Cohen says he was inspired after recent attacks against redhaired students at A.E. Wright Middle School in Calabasas. The attacks were said to have been inspired by a South Park episode and also involved a Facebook group titled, "Kick a Ginger Day."
Cohen says he wants to promote diversity and tolerance. He also says he's surprised at the response "Hug a Ginger Day" has received.
