PASADENA, Calif. (KTLA) -- An 87-year-old Pasadena man has been sentenced to 26 years to life in the 2009 hatchet murder of his 55-year-old wife.
James Che Ming Lu was convicted in July in the 2009 murder of Michelle Lu and the attempted murder of her 32-year-old son Ji Ma Zeng.
Lu was arrested after calling sheriff's dispatchers to report killing his wife at their home in the 100 block of South Rosemead Boulevard.
Investigators said the couple had been arguing and the slaying was the apparent result of a domestic dispute.
At some point during the fight, Lu struck his wife Michelle, a nanny, with a hatchet, according to deputies.
Arriving deputies found Lu with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Lu then walked down the hall and tried to use the ax on her son, but the younger man managed to fend off the attack and flee to a neighborÂ’s house.
Zeng said his father once worked as a carpenter, which is why he had the hatchet.
