CENTURY CITY -- 13 were arrested for running into busy streets and blocking traffic during the "Janitors for Justice" protest in the Century City area.

About 300 people attended the protest in support of laid-off janitors outside JP Morgan Chase's Century Plaza Towers, located at 2000 Avenue of the Stars, Richard French of the Los Angeles Police Department said.

19 janitors recently lost their jobs in the building. Fifty-seven of their co-workers, who were left to pick up the additional work, walked out in protest and were then suspended by JP Morgan Chase.

The LAPD announced street closures for Thursday, between 11:45 a.m. and 6:15 p.m.:

Century Park East between Santa Monica Boulevard and Olympic Boulevard; and Constellation Boulevard between Century Park East and Avenue of the Stars.

There were no plans to close Avenue of the Stars.

The protest ended around 3:00 p.m.

On Tuesday, protesters set up a tent city outside the Century Plaza Towers, and began a 72-hour hunger strike, which will continue through Friday.

The Service Employees International Union has called on JP Morgan to give the janitors their jobs back.

SEIU spokesman Jacob Hay said the union recognizes some facilities may need to cut costs in the current economy.

It's targeting these particular layoffs because JP Morgan Chase, which recently received a $95 billion taxpayer bailout, owns the building.

The union says Chase is cutting costs by targeting the lowest-paid workers.

Chase has declined to comment.
