Thousands line up for job fair in Los Angeles (KTLA-TV / August 31, 2011) |
The job fair, hosted by Congresswoman Maxine Waters, kicked off Tuesday at the Crenshaw Christian Center and runs through Wednesday evening.
The event offers help to unemployed members of the African American community, which has been one of the hardest hit during the down economy. It's said that the unemployment rate for African Americans is at 16 percent while the overall unemployment rate is at 9 percent.
Some people lined up as early as 3 a.m. for the job fair, which opened at 9 a.m. and runs through 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The line stretched around the block with people hoping to find a full-time job.
"Even if some people don't get a job they're going to find out what employers are looking for and what they need to do to improve themselves," Waters said.
The event will help job seekers learn how to use the internet in their search as well as provide resume, application and interview education.
The Congressional Black Caucus has been organizing job fairs across the country.
