LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (KTLA) -- Former Penn State running back John Cappelletti is pleading with the public to help find his stolen college and NFL memorabilia.

Investigators believe burglars broke into the Heisman Trophy winner's Laguna Niguel home on January 20th.

They say the thieves took $50,000 worth of jewelry and sports memorabilia, including a 25-year anniversary Heisman ring.

Cappelletti won Penn State's only Heisman Trophy in 1973, and played under the late Joe Paterno.

He donated the trophy to the university's "All Sports Museum."

"It's difficult," Cappelletti said at a news conference on Tuesday.

"You know, I've had a rough fall between the Penn State stuff and Coach Paterno last week and now something like this happening."

Cappelletti also played for the Los Angeles Rams and the San Diego Chargers.

He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
