LOS ANGELES -- Police shot and killed one of three dogs accused of attacking several residents in the Hyde Park area of South Los Angeles, including one woman who was hospitalized from her injuries.
The attacks occurred in 4000 block of Slauson Avenue and on nearby West 58th Place, starting about 1 a.m. Friday, Los Angeles police Lt. Julie McAlpine of the 77th Street Station said.
The dogs, described by police as bullmastiffs, bit a woman who was walking and a good samaritan who stopped to help her, according to witnesses at the scene.
One resident said he heard someone screaming for their life. "Screaming like, help me God somebody please help me," he said.
The man, who wished to remain unidentified, said he ran outside and found three large dogs surrounding the woman and "biting her all up."
He said some residents hopped in cars and honked horns to try to scare the dogs away. He also said he saw the dogs attack three people.
The woman was being treated for unknown injuries at a local hospital.
It's believed the person who helped her was also being treated at a hospital, however, officials would not immediately confirm that information.
At least one dog was put in a police car, but an officer fatally shot another one after it became agressive.
Animal control officers eventually caught a third dog, and the two surviving animals were taken to a shelter, according to crews at the scene.
Bullmastiffs are a cross between bulldog and mastiff, originally bred in England as guard dogs on game preserves and hunting estates to stealthily track and catch poachers, according to the American Kennel Club.
