LAKE VIEW TERRACE -- Authorities continue to investigate a fatal police pursuit that left a 6-year-old girl dead in Lake View Terrace.
The pursuit began around 6:22 p.m. Thursday when police responded to a report of a man with a gun, Officer April Harding of the Los Angeles Police Department said.
The suspects tossed two handguns out the window during the brief pursuit, police said.
Kayla Woods was playing with friends in a yard in the 11900 Block of Fenton Avenue when she was struck by the suspect's out-of-control sedan, police said. The car pinned the girl against a brick wall.
The child was transported to a local hospital where she later died of her injuries.
According to the LAPD, the sedan hit the child with enough force that the vehicle's airbags deployed on impact.
Immediately after striking the child, police officers say the suspect and the three people inside the the vehicle fled, scattering throughout the neighborhood.
Officers arrested the two passengers.
The driver was later arrested after an extensive search through the neighborhood.
Police say he was found hiding in a trash can.
The suspects are facing vehicular homicide and drug charges.
