LANCASTER -- A 19-year-old woman who went to a hospital emergency room saying she'd had a miscarriage has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and child neglect after a newborn baby was found in a cabinet in her bedroom, authorities said.
Alyna Gutierrez told doctors at Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center that she had miscarried at home and flushed the remains down the toilet, but a doctor determined she was too far along in her pregnancy for a miscarriage to have occurred, according to Lancaster sheriff's Detective Miguel Torres.
The doctor concluded Gutierrez had actually given birth.
Guiterrez's mother found a newborn in her daughter's bedroom wrapped in towels in a cabinet while her daughter was at the hospital, Torres said.
The baby was taken to a hospital, and is listed in good condition.
Gutierez is being held on $1 million bail.
