LAWNDALE, Calif. (KTLA) -- A man pretending to be a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy pulled over a motorist Tuesday, and now real law enforcement authorities are warning the public that he may try it again.

The phony deputy rode a motorcycle equipped with red and blue flashing lights, and he wore a khaki shirt and green pants -- the standard uniform colors for sheriff's department employees.

The white man was between 35 and 40-years-old.

He pulled the driver over near the intersection of 147th Street and Inglewood Avenue, according to sheriff's officials.

The man's badge didn't look right to the driver, despite the fact that most of the uniform looked genuine.

The driver asked the fake deputy what station he was assigned to. The man then got back on his motorcycle and drove away.

Sheriff's officials say motorists should take the following steps to defend against a phony stop:

-Pull over in a well-lit area.

-Ask the officer or deputy to identify himself or herself, especially if they are dressed in plain clothes.

-Take note if the uniform seems unusual.

-Beware of any strange requests or unusually personal questions.
