Near Miss: 2 Jets Come Within 80 Feet at LAX
LOS ANGELES -- Officials say two passenger jets came within 80 feet of each other on a runway at Los Angeles International Airport.

It happened Sunday when a Midwest Airlines Embraer E-190 passed the hold bars on a taxiway and came closer than it should have to a Northwest Airlines Boeing 757 taking off on the south side’s inner runway.

The Midwest Flight landed at 2:20 p.m.

According to the FAA the pilot was told to turn onto another taxiway and stop, but the plane continued toward the path of the Northwest jet.

An air traffic controller noticed and ordered the Midwest jet to stop.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says the jet went beyond a hold point 200 feet from the edge of the next runway where Northwest Airlines Flight 623 was taking off.
