HOLLYWOOD -- Police are still searching for the driver of a BMW that struck a paparazzo while carrying starlet Lindsay Lohan.

The accident happened behind the Hotel Cafe in the 1600 block of North Cahuenga Boulevard around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Police initially classified the incident as an "assault with a deadly weapon," however, officers viewed video of the ordeal and have decided it no longer meets those standards, TMZ reported Tuesday. It's possible the driver could be targeted with a hit and run, but not because anyone was injured, the site added.

Witnesses said paparazzi surrounded the black BMW 650 as Lohan and her assistant got inside the car in the narrow alley behind the club.

The unidentified driver then allegedly stepped on the gas before the paparazzi could move aside, hitting one man and injuring his wrist and leg.

The car drove away and never came back, witnesses said.

The LAPD West Traffic Division confirmed officers responded to a vehicle versus a pedestrian traffic collision.

"I was informed by an officer that a vehicle had sped away at a high rate of speed and hit a paparazzi photographer causing an injury to his hand, his wrist," said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Vasquez.

He said police were still investigating the circumstances of the accident, including who was in the car at the time.

No arrests were made, according to Los Angeles police Officer Norma Eisenman of the Media Relations Section. Police took a report, and are not considering the case to be a hit-and-run.

Rick William, a celebrity photographer who witnessed the incident, said Lohan was in the car with a male assistant and that a female assistant wearing dark sunglasses was driving.

The driver was not identified.

The victim, a 220-pound male, was treated at the scene and interviewed by police.
