LONG BEACH -- Three suspects and a police detective were shot during a gun battle in Long Beach that happened after a short pursuit.

One of the suspects was killed and the two others were hospitalized for their injuries.

The detective was struck by friendly fire and was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, according to Long Beach police.

Long Beach detectives were apparently in Compton investigating another crime when they witnessed the suspects involved in a drive-by shooting.

The detectives followed the suspects' vehicle, a green Thunderbird, and the suspects began firing at them, but no one was hurt, according to Long Beach police.

The suspects led police on a brief pursuit along the 710 Freeway that ended when the suspects tried to exit at Willow in Long Beach.They parked their vehicle on the Willow Street overpass and remained in the vehicle for several minutes, police said.

A short time later, uniform officers arrived and a shootout with the three suspects broke out.

It was then that the three suspects and the detective were shot.

A large perimeter was set up by Long Beach police at the Willow offramp to secure evidence.

Long Beach detectives and the Los Angeles County district attorney's office were investigating the incident.
