CANOGA PARK -- Two mens are in police custody, accused of setting off "dry ice bombs" in several mailboxes thoughout a Canoga Park neighborhood.

Officials say the vandals placed explosives in four mailboxes in homes along Welby Way, Balmoral Lane, Highland Avenue and Farralone Avenue, according to Sgt. Brian Reynolds of the LAPD's Topanga Station.

The suspects were identified as 20 year old Joseph Tovar and 18 year old Jacob Cashen, both from the Chatsworth area.

All of the attacks occurred Thursday night around 9:30 p.m.

Edward Benson, whose mailbox was bombed in the attack said the explosion was very loud.

"If I had been going out to the mailbox to check the mail, I probably would have had my head blown off. That's how big of an explosion it was. It was a very big explosion."

One of the neighbors spotted the suspects and called police.

"Because all the incidents happened moments after each other, we had all our resources in the area," Reynolds said.

"Our airship unit located the suspects leaving the area and an arrest was made."

Reynolds said the preliminary investigation indicated that the suspects were randomly targeting the homes. No one was injured during any of the attacks.

Debris from the explosions littered the streets and front yards of the homes.

"When you hear an explosion outside your home, obviously a lot of people are armed these days, you come outside and see something like that. These kids are lucky they didn't get shot," Ted Boyias, who lives in the neighborhood said.

Both men were booked at LAPD's Van Nuys Division jail for Section 12303.3 of the California Penal Code, Explosion of a Destructive Device.

Bail has been set at $1 million for each suspect.
