MALIBU -- Actress Ricki Lake, her two children and her dog escaped a fire that swept through their Malibu home Saturday morning.
The beachfront home in Malibu suffered extensive damage. Pacific Coast Highway was closed temporarily as firefighters battled the fire just west of Topanga Beach.
Deputies with the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station said Lake was trying to refuel a portable heater when a couch caught fire. She and her two sons got out of the home quickly and were standing outside the rented home when the first fire truck rolled up.
Flames shot 30 feet into the air as the attic and roof burned. Firefighters had to use power tools to cut into gates of adjacent houses to protect them.
The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes and an official knock-down was declared at 7:30a.m.
Ricki Lake first rose to fame in the movie "Hairspray,' and had roles in several other movies before starting a syndicated daytime talk show.
