MALIBU, Calif. -- A small earthquake struck Monday night off the coast of Malibu.

The undersea quake hit at 10:42 p.m. Monday near the channel Islands and had a preliminary magnitude of 4.0, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake was centered about 10 miles undersea about three miles north-northeast of Santa Barbara Island and 39 miles south-southwest of Malibu.

Los Angeles and Ventura County sheriff's deputies say they did not receive any calls about the quake.
