APPLE VALLEY-- A 55-year old man is in custody after reportedly throwing knives at Sheriff deputies.
The drama began when deputies were called to a disturbance call at 11414 Serra Road, early Thursday morning.
A woman told deputies that Robert Nicholson took her vehicle and drove to an unknown location.
She also said that Nicholson returned to her residence and threatened her with a knife, said Rod Hoops, of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies confronted Nicholson, who was still standing in the street in front of the residence, with two knives in his hand.
One deputy told Nicholson to put the knives down, but he refused, Hoops said.
A second deputy then fired a non-lethal bean bag at Nicholson, but it failed to stop him.
Nicholson then threw the knives at the deputies, Hoops says.
One deputy then fired a gun, striking Nicholson.
According to Hoops, Nicholson grabbed a third knife, but was apprehended without further incident.
He was transported by helicopter to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment of his gunshot wounds, police say.
No deputies were injured during the incident.
