LOS ANGELES -- A USC student seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash that killed his friend is opening up about the horrifying experience.
Marcus Garfinkle, who was 19 at the time of the 2009 crash, told KTLA that he feels pain everyday but tries not to think about it.
He was walking his 18-year-old friend Adrianna Bachan home on March 29, 2009 when police say an Infinity, driven by Claudia Cabrera, ran a red light and struck the students as they crossed Jefferson Boulevard at Hoover Street just before 3 a.m.
"The car comes, we're blind-sided. I go through the windshield," Garfinkle told KTLA.
Bachan was killed almost instantly.
Garfinkle landed on the hood of the car, which kept moving.
"So I literally was impaled on the windshield," he said.
As the car traveled down Jefferson Boulevard, Garfinkle says, he blanked out for about 15 seconds.
Then, the car stopped.
Cabrera's 33-year-old husband, Josue Luna, pulled Garfinkle from the car's damaged windshield and set his body on the ground before Cabrera drove off, according to police.
The couple's 7-month-old son was in the back seat of the car at the time.
Garfinkle said he "woke up" on the side of the street, bleeding and in "incredibly bad shape."
He doesn't remember being taken off the hood of the car, or being placed on the ground.
Garfinkle says he thinks of his friend Adrianna everyday, and he's still trying to heal from his injuries.
His lower abdomen bears a large scar as well as his left arm.
"I'm in pain everyday. I don't like to talk about it. I like to put it out of my mind. I don't like to bring it upon people. I like to keep it in the back. It hurts everyday."
Garfinkle says he wishes Cabrera and Luna would have acknowledged what they had done, and he hopes justice is served.
Cabrera, 31, pleaded no contest Thursday to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and a felony count of leaving the scene of an accident.
Luna pleaded no contest to a felony count of leaving the scene of an accident.
Cabrera faces up to eight years in prison and Luna could get up to seven years when they couple are sentenced May 24.
