ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- Police are searching for the man who robbed and raped a teenage girl in a culvert near an Escondido park.

The 16-year-old told investigators she was walking in the flood-control channel off North Ash Street and East Valley Parkway when the assailant confronted her shortly before 8:30 a.m., Sgt. Tony Masten said.

She said the man was wearing a ski mask and sunglasses with white frames.

According to police, the man demanded several items from the teen before he raped her.

The suspect appeared to be in his 30s, the girl told police.

The victim was taken to a hospital for an examination.

An immediate search of the area turned up no suspects.
