RIVERSIDE -- The so-called "Masquerade Bandit" is under arrest after FBI officials say he tried to hold up a Riverside bank wearing a woman's wig and makeup.
"One item that caught the attention of the bank employees was that the suspect had a five o'clock shadow showing through his facial makeup," Lt. Leon Phillips of the Riverside Police Department said.
47-year-old Darryl Depastino, of Los Angeles, was arrested on suspicion of Tuesday's 3:23 p.m. holdup at Guaranty Bank along the 5300 block of Canyon Crest Drive, according to FBI spokesperson Laura Eimiller.
Eimiller said Depastino used a note that threatened to shoot the bank's teller. He demanded large bills and threatened that if she did not comply, it would get "ugly." Depastino threatened to 'shoot his way out" of the bank, Eimiller said.
Based on witness reports of the getaway car and its license plate number, officials at UC Riverside found the vehicle parked in a lot next to the campus.
"Based on a description broadcast by units at the bank, a suspect was located by a UCR police officer just inside the campus grounds," Phillips said. The suspect was arrested as he walked across the parking lot.
FBI officials say Depastino is suspected in three bank robberies in Riverside and Rialto.
