MALIBU -- Actor Mel Gibson was unhurt after a single car crash in Malibu Sunday night.
It happened about 8:35 p.m. while Gibson, 54, was driving his 2008 Maserati southbound on Malibu Canyon Road south of the tunnel, according to the California Highway Patrol.
"For unknown reasons, Mr. Gibson steered his car to the right and struck a rock hillside," according to the official report.
He stopped his car at the scene and was contacted by officers from the West Valley CHP area.
His Maseratti had to be towed from the scene and he received a ride home from a friend.

Gibson told officers he didn't know how the car drifted into the hillside.
Officers say the actor did not have a cell phone and wasn't sure if he dozed off. He simply said he didn't know how the accident happened.
Gibson's spokesman Alan Nierob said in an e-mail the actor-director was doing fine.
Alcohol is not suspected in the crash.
The accident is the latest in a series of problems for Gibson.
He is in the middle of a bitter custody dispute over his infant daughter with his former girlfriend, Russian singer Oksana Grigorieva. He also remained under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for an alleged assault on Grigorieva earlier this year, although he has not been arrested and no charges have been filed.
Grigorieva, 40, is also under investigation after Gibson accused her of attempting to extort him. She has denied the allegation.
