LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Actor Mel Gibson turned himself in to El Segundo police Wednesday night as part of his sentence for a misdemeanor battery conviction.
Gibson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor spousal battery charge Friday in connection with a now infamous 2010 blowout involving his ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigoreiva.
The judge sentenced Gibson to 36 months' probation and to complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling program, as well as 16 hours of community service.
Radar says Gibson was finger printed and had his mugshot taken on Wednesday night. He was released on $20,000 bail after about an hour.
Gibson's attorney, Blair Berk, told the judge in the case on Friday that the actor, "maintains his innocence."
"He feels a plea is in the best interest of his children," Berk said.
The complaint accused the Academy Award winning actor of "willfully and unlawfully" using force and violence against Grigorieva, a Russian musician and the mother of the couple's daughter.
Berk released the following statement to TMZ last week: "I know from almost 20 years as a criminal defense lawyer that sometimes justice can come for a client at too high a personal price. That is particularly so for Mel, whose right to due process can only be exercised in this case with an enormous media circus attached."
Berk continued: "Mel's priority throughout all of this has been that the best interests of his young daughter Lucia and the rest of his children be put first in any decisions made. It is with only that in mind that he asked me to approach the District Attorney with a proposal that would bring all of this to an immediate end."
Gibson and Grigorieva have been involved in a bitter public battle for custody of Lucia -- who is now 16-months old.
Grigorieva released a series of recordings of phone conversations with Gibson, in which the actor rattles off racial epithets and threatens his former girlfriend.
The actor has accused Grigorieva of extortion, saying she tried to get $15 million from him to keep the tapes private.
Prosecutors decided not to file criminal charges against Grigorieva.
Gibson has seven other children with soon-to-by ex-wife Robyn Moore. Gibson and Moore were married for 28 years.
