LOS ANGELES -- A man who fatally stabbed a woman under police protection in the Mid-City area last week was a Mexican national who was twice deported and had a history of violent threats against women, according to government records.
Daniel Carlon, 23, was shot and killed by police as he stabbed 30-year-old Flor Medrano in her apartment on Cochran Avenue near Pico Boulevard last Wednesday.
Medrano had filed a domestic violence report against Carlon earlier that day, and LAPD officers were in a patrol car outside her home when he broke in through a bathroom window, officials said.
Carlon was said to be living in the U.S. illegally.
According to U.S. Department of Homeland Security records, Carlon had been deported to Mexico twice -- once in January 2007 on the orders of an immigration judge and again in June of this year after he was arrested by federal immigration officials.
He had also pleaded guilty to charges of domestic violence in two cases which involved another woman, according to the San Bernardino County district attorney's office.
A police report showed that in March 2005, Carlon threatened to kill a woman if she reported the abuse to authorities. Carlon pleaded guilty to felony spousal abuse, was sentenced to 180 days in jail and was ordered to complete a domestic violence program. He was released in the fall of 2005 and began stalking the same woman, officials said.
The woman then filed a report stating Carlon was harassing her over the phone and knocking on her window. He again pleaded guilty to felony spousal abuse and was sent to prison in February 2006 for two years.
Police say Carlon had been sending Medrano threatening text messages before she was murdered. Investigators say Carlon scaled the building's roof and broke in through a rear window.
Officers arrived to find the stabbing in progress and opened fire, fatally wounding Carlon.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on leave while the shooting is investigated.
Neighbors described Medrano as a friendly woman with a 3-year-old daughter who had moved in a few months ago.
The child, from a previous relationship, was being cared for elsewhere at the time of the stabbing.
