CORONA -- Medical examiners say a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy found dead in the Cleveland National Forest after a massive search killed himself with a shotgun wound to the head.

The Riverside County coroner's office said Tuesday the death of 42-year-old Zoltan Tombol has been ruled a suicide.

The coroner's office did not reveal whether the body had any other signs of trauma.

Why Tombol killed himself, if known, was not disclosed.

Tombol was reported missing Oct.18 by his wife after he failed to pick up his son as planned following a run in the Cleveland National Forest.

A multi-agency search team of more than 100, including some on horseback and some with dogs, scoured a three-mile area, with two helicopters searching the forest from above.

Corona police found Tombol's gray Ford F-150 pickup at the end of a fire access road south of Green River Road and the Riverside (91) Freeway in Riverside County, said Smyser.

They had also picked up cell phone activation in the area prior to finding the truck.

Tombol, an avid hiker and runner, liked to frequent the area.

His body was later found at the base of a cliff near a fire road.

Tombol was a 19 year veteran of the department and worked in the training division. He was reportedly the first deputy on the scene in April 2002 when a colleague, Deputy David March, was fatally shot during a traffic stop.

Tombol was also a former member of the U.S. Army's elite 82nd Airborne Division.
