LAGUNA NIGUEL -- A suspected child molester was shot by police as officers attempted to serve a warrant, authorities said.

It happened just before 11:00 this morning near Rancho Niguel Road and Greenfield Drive.

Police from Brea and Anaheim went to the Milano condo complex with a $1 million arrest warrant for the 44 year old man, said Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

As officers approached, the man bolted from the complex in the direction of the Marian Bergeson Elementary School.

That's when officers opened fire, hitting the suspect several times, Amormino said.

He was taken to Mission Hospital. There is no word on his condition.

The school was locked down for about two hours after the shooting. Amormino says the children did not witness the shooting.

The man is a suspect in a molestation case in Yorba Linda.
