The shooting happened about 9:30 a.m. at Carl's Jr. restaurant near the intersection of Cesar Chavez Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue.
Officers responded to a report that a man was breaking windows at the restaurant.
When the officers arrived, they saw people running out of the restaurant, according to a news release issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
A man walked out of the restaurant holding a three-foot-long metal bar, police said.
Officers ordered the man to drop the bar and he refused. One of the officers shocked the man with a Taser, to little effect.
The man then came toward the officers and swung the bar twice, according to the news release.
That's when the officers shot the man.
One officers shot the man five times, and a second officer shot the man five more times after he fell to the pavement.
Paramedics rushed him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Sheriff's homicide detectives are now investigating the shooting.
A video posted on YouTube captured the entire incident.
The video clearly shows two officers trying to get the man to drop the metal bar, and the man ignores them.
The video does not show the man actually swing the metal bar at officers.
A woman sitting across the street in another fast food restaurant was hurt by shattered glass believed to have been caused by a stray bullet.
No one else was injured.
