INDO -- The mother of a child who died after being scalded by a pot of boiling water is under arrest on murder charges.
39 year old Yolanda Guadalupe Perez was taken into custody Tuesday on suspicion of homicide and assault of a child resulting in death, according to Riverside County Sheriff's Sgt. David Barton.
Perez' 3 year old daughter, Delilah Urrutia, was found dead in her home in the 44000 block of Vista Dunes Lane in La Quinta on June 15, Barton said. She had second-degree burns on her face, neck, chest, back and arms.
Investigators says Perez told them that her daughter had "accidentally tipped a pot of extremely hot water on herself" that had been placed on the kitchen counter. But, detectives later determined that Perez never sought medical treatment for her daughter following the accident, and sent her to her room for "misbehaving."
Sgt. Barton says Perez only called police when she discovered that her daughter had stopped breathing several hours later.
An autopsy revealed that Delilah had suffered additional injuries that appeared to have been received over a period of time from continuous physical abuse, Barton said.
Perez is being held on $1 million bail.
