LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Friday is National Doughnut Day and some stores are celebrating by giving away free doughnuts.

Krispy Kreme is giving away free doughnuts at participating stores. No purchase is necessary.

Dunkin' Donuts is giving away free doughnuts with the purchase of any beverage.

National Doughnut Day falls on the first Friday of June each year.

The celebration was created in 1938 by the Salvation Army in order to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers duding WWI, according to the Salvation Army's website.

Americans reportedly consume more than 10 million doughnuts a year.
