SAN DIEGO-- A U.S. Naval Academy student has been charged with armed robbery, drug smuggling, conspiracy, burglary, and conduct unbecoming an officer, say Navy Officials

Midshipman Juan Domingo Alonso, 24, of North Hollywood, stands accused of smuggling 153 pounds of marijuana into the United States from Mexico, naval officials said Friday.

The Navy believes Alonso had intentions to distribute the drug.

Alonso also stands accused of breaking into a house on the evening of July 5th, 2008, armed with both a pistol and a shotgun, and assaulting the house's occupant. Alonso allegedly bound the man's hands with nylon straps before stealing $12,000 in money orders and about 120 pounds of marijuana.

The Navy announced Friday that Alonso was arrested by federal agents on June 10th at the San Ysidro port of entry, when he was discovered to be driving a vehicle with 153 pounds of marijuana hidden inside it.

Alonso was enrolled in a summer training program in San Diego at the time of his arrest, and did not have permission from his commanding officer to travel to Mexico, the charges allege.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents handed Alonso to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, took over the investigation.

Alonso is currently being held in the brig at Miramar Marine Corps Air station.

An investigative hearing for the midshipman is planned for sometime in the coming weeks.
