The child's mother, Brianne Luna, refused to give deputies a statement about what happened, Riverside County Sheriff's Sgt. Joe Borja.

Homicide detectives returned to the home and, after an investigation, arrested Luna on suspicion of homicide, investigators said.

She remained jailed Wednesday on $1 million bail.

Sheriff's officials say there were other family members at the home when the child drowned, however, it was not immediately known if the boy's father was one of them.

"We believe this is a deliberate act and not a case of child neglect or child endangerment," said Deputy Melissa Nieburger.

There was no immediate word on a motive.
