RESEDA -- A stockpile of ammunition exploded and burst into flames at a home in Reseda Sunday morning.

Authorities say ammunition inside a shipping container caught fire, causing an explosion and burning two sheds to the ground.

City firefighters first responded to a fire at 19219 W. Ingomar St. about 8:45 Sunday morning, then called in the bomb squad.

It took firefighters nearly two hours to put out the flames -- they had to work from a distance because the ammunition was continuing to explode.

There were no reported injuries. But about 50 people five nearby homes were evacuated. They were all still evacuated late Sunday afternoon as the fire department, hazmat and bomb squad are still on scene.

Thousands of rounds of military-style ammunition exploded inside a large metal, ocean-going container, according to radio reports.

Two outbuildings burned, according to firefighters on scene. After firefighters extinguished the fire, a Los Angeles police bomb squad took over control of the scene.

The owner of the container, Ed Wyman, was at the scene assisting police and fire officials with information. Officials said Wyman had the appropriate permits for the ammunition involved.

Wyman says he's a retired gun enthusiast, and buys and sells ammunition as a hobby.

The cause of the fire is unknown, and is under investigation.
