YUCAIPA -- Evacuation orders have been lifted in San Bernardino County, where firefighters are gaining the upper hand on two wildfires.
The 1,013-acre Oak Glen Fire is 75 percent contained, with full containment expected by Labor Day.
Evacuation orders in Oak Glen -- a scenic community of farmhouses and apple orchards -- have been changed from mandatory to advisory. Only residents are being allowed back into the fire areas, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Web site.
The Oak Glen fire was reported around 1:45 p.m. Sunday near Potato Canyon and Oak Glen Roads in San Bernardino County, just north of the Riverside County line.
A few miles away, an 860-acre wildfire in Yucaipa known as the Pendleton fire is now 70 percent contained. Full containment is expected by Friday.
Earlier Tuesday, a thunderstorm and winds gusting up to 30 mph pushed flames toward a community, but firefighters aided by water dropping aircraft held them back.
Residents of some 400 homes were evacuated earlier in the day but that order was lifted late Tuesday. Only residents are being allowed back into the affected areas.
Cal Fire public information officer Jason Meyer said seven air tankers, one DC-10, and four water-dropping helicopters are aiding in the firefighting efforts.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Tuesday declared a state of emergency in San Bernardino County because of the two fires.
Los Angeles, Monterey, Mariposa and Placer counties already have emergency declarations because of fires.
