OCOTILLO -- The driver of a car that swerved into a group of motorcyclists, killing five people, has been released from custody while the search continues for a second driver accused of triggering the fatal crash, authorities said.

The crash happened just before 1 p.m. Saturday on Route 98 in Ocotillo, just miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.

Officials say 36-year-old Carlos Ramirez Bobadilla of Mexicali, Mexico, was arrested about five hours after the crash because his breath smelled of alcohol.

Bobadilla still could face DUI charges if tests determine his blood-alcohol level exceeded the legal limit, according to CHP Officer Deann Goudie. She said Bobadilla's speedometer was found stuck at 60 mph, which is 5 mph below the speed limit.

Bobadilla is recovering from a fractured head and leg and a scalp lacerations at a San Diego hospital. A woman in his white Dodge Avenger was among the five killed.

A car tried to pass about a dozen motorcyclists on the two-lane highway, forcing an oncoming car -- driven by Bobadilla -- to swerve, according to Imperial County fire Captain Peter Stanton.

Bobadilla lost control and ran into 12 motorcyclists.
