HAWTHORNE -- An apparent carjacking ended with an officer-involved
shooting today in Hawthorne, and authorities surrounded a business where a
suspect was believed to be hiding.
The shooting occurred near a discount store at 135th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard, according to the Hawthorne Police Department.
Paramedics sent to the location shortly after noon transported one patient in unknown condition to a hospital, the county fire department reported.
KTLA reported that three suspects were involved in the carjacking, and one of them may have been injured in the gunfire.
Police cordoned off a large area and closed streets surrounding the store, with at least one suspect believed to be inside.
A SWAT team was also brought to the scene. It was unclear how many other people might still be inside the store.
