OXNARD -- Authorities are searching for the assailants who fatally shot a 13-year-old boy as he walked along an Oxnard street.
The victim was walking toward the corner of Roosevelt Avenue and First Street in the La Colonia area just before 8 p.m. Wednesday when he was shot eight times, police said.
The boy was pronounced dead about an hour later at St. John's Regional Medical Center. His identity was not immediately released.
Dozens of officers have been searching the neighborhood and interviewing neighbors to piece together what happened.
There's no word yet on a motive in the shooting, however, it's possible gang activity was involved, according to David Keith, a spokesman for the Oxnard Police Department.
A teen said the victim lived in the neighborhood and was carrying books with him at the time of the shooting.
Witnesses reportedly told police that they saw two Hispanic males approach the teen, and flee on foot.
No arrests have been made.
