NORTH HILLS - Authorities say fire ripped through a home plagued by severe pack rat conditions, killing three cats and injuring the homeowner.
The fire was reported around 1:35 a.m. in the 9500 block of Gerald Avenue near Plummer Street in North Hills, officials said.
Flames were raging through the one-story home's garage and two bedrooms when firefighters arrived, according to Los Angeles Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Marcus.
While fighting the flames, crews discovered at least three dead cats inside the home, Marcus said, adding that the fire was put out in roughly 30 minutes.
Marcus said the home suffered from severe pack rat conditions, which extended to the garage and the exterior.
The homeowner, a man, suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Investigators believe the fire was started by power cords that were set up inside the home.
