SIMI VALLEY -- Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin will not speak at the 50th anniversary celebratory dinner of the Simi Valley Republican Women.

The event is scheduled to take place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum on August 8.

The appearance would have been Palin's first post-resignation speech.

A spokesperson for Palin said on her Facebook page Thursday that Palin had never committed to attending the event, despite an apparent commitment made before her resignation to deliver the keynote speech at the dinner.

"Neither the governor's staff nor SarahPAC (her political organization) has ever committed to attending this event," the spokesperson wrote.

Simi Valley Republican Women leader Pat Saraceno said she respected Palin's right to change her mind. The group's Web site said it was "honored" to have been considered for a Palin speech.

Refunds for the $100 per ticket soiree will be offered, and a conservative talk radio host will fill in for Palin, the group said.

Palin opponents had been circulating e-mails about organizing a large demonstration outside the Reagan Library.

Earlier this year, Palin was offered a speaking role at an annual congressional fundraiser in Washington, but was replaced after she wavered over accepting the invitation.

The governor eventually appeared at the dinner but did not address the crowd.
