PALMDALE -- A sheriff's deputy was shot and wounded on a downtown street, prompting a pursuit through two Palmdale neighborhoods before a suspect was captured two miles away.
The deputy was in a marked patrol car heading west on East Avenue Q-4 about 8 p.m. Sunday when Dejon King, 18, crossed the street in front of him, apparently concealing something in the waistband of his pants, said Deputy Johnie Jones of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.
The deputy exited the patrol car and ordered King toward him, but he did not comply, Jones said.
King quickly walked toward an apartment complex gate near the location, but discovered it was locked, he said.
He then turned and "immediately began shooting at the deputy," Jones said.
The deputy, who is in his 20s, returned fire while taking cover behind his patrol car.
The deputy suffered a shoulder wound during the shootout.
The suspect was not struck, officials said.
After the shooting, King discarded his gun at the scene, got into a vehicle and drove away, Jones said.
A brief pursuit ensued and the suspect was later arrested after forcing his way into a home in the 2000 block of Cape Cod Lane, officials said.
King was booked without bail at the Palmdale Station on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer, Jones said.
The deputy was being treated for a non-life threatening shoulder wound at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.
He was listed in stable condition.
