Deputies investigate a car abandoned on railroad tracks in Palmdale |
PALMDALE ( KTLA) -- A freight train hit a vehicle that appeared to be abandoned adjacent to railroad tracks early Saturday morning. Investigators with the L.A. County Sheriff's Department are now searching for the owner of the vehicle.
The collision happened just before 5:00 a.m. as a Union Pacific train traveled over 40th Street East, south of E Ave S-10.
The train engineer spotted two people run from a truck that was stopped along the tracks, but he was unable to stop the train in time to prevent the collision.
CHP officers responded to the scene and immediately called paramedics in case anyone was injured.
When it became apparent that no one was in the vehicle, CHP officers called in deputies to investigate.
Sheriff's officials with the Palmdale station tell KTLA that prior to the incident with the train, the driver of the truck crashed into a pole along the tracks, then that person and a passenger ran from scene as the train approached.
No one on the Union Pacific train was injured.
According to investigators, the train was damaged as it clipped the abandoned truck.
The east-west tracks through Palmdale were closed for several hours during the investigation.
