PARAMOUNT, Calif. (KTLA) -- An investigation is underway following a fatal deputy-involved shooting in Paramount.

It happened about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 16400 block of Paramount Boulevard.

Authorities said there was a confrontation between Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and a suspect who stood in the street and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

"It appeared this individual was under the influence of some kind of narcotic," said Lt. John Carrina. "When the deputies went to contact him along with their sergeant, this guy jumped up and grabbed the deputy's gun. At that time, he shot twice, striking the suspect."

The man -- whose name has not been released -- was hit twice in the upper torso. He died at a local hospital.

The deputy was not hurt.

"You only have a few seconds to make a decision like that, especially when somebody grabs your gun," Carrina said.

He said the deputies did have a taser out that they were prepared to use.

"When the individual grabbed the deputy's gun, now you have a possible use of deadly force if he takes the gun away and uses it on the deputies," he said.

The shooting will be investigated by the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office, the L.A. sheriff's Homicide Bureau, the Internal Affairs Bureau and the Office of Independent Review.
