SANTA MONICA -- Pacific Coast Highway is open once again after being shut down for several hours Thursday morning due to a water main break caused by a suspected drunk driver.
The incident in the 1100 block of PCH was reported just after 12:30 a.m., according to Santa Monica fire officials.
It all started as a traffic collision involving a suspected drunk driver. The impact of the collision caused the pipe to burst, sending a huge geyser into the air.
Water and mud covered the roadway, forcing it to be shut down in both directions between the California Incline and the McClure Tunnel.
A backhoe was brought in to help plug off the geyser.
The southbound side of PCH reopened shortly before 8 a.m.
About three hours later, the northbound lanes appeared to be open as well.
The driver involved in the initial crash was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence.
