LOS ANGELES -- Two people have been arrested after a suspected DUI crash in the mid-city area of Los Angeles caused a traffic light to fall, killing a pedestrian.
The crash occurred around 3:15 a.m. on Western Avenue near Pico Boulevard, said Officer Cleon Joseph of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police say 27-year-old Jasen Jack of Atlanta was driving south on Western Avenue in a 2008 Dodge Caliber when his vehicle went off the road and hit a traffic signal.
The impact of the crash caused the signal to fall onto pedestrian standing on the northwest corner of Western Avenue and Pico Boulevard, Joseph said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives believe Jack may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
A second arrest related to the accident occurred when a woman carjacked a witness's car from a nearby gas station, according to LAPD officers.
The witness left her keys in the car and ran over to help the crash victims when another woman stole her car, officials said. The suspect was arrested about seven blocks from the crash scene.
The car has been returned to the witness, police said.
Police encouraged anyone with information regarding this collision to contact LAPD West Traffic Detective Stephanie Banks at (213) 485-4022 or 1-877-LAPD-24-7.
