FULLERTON -- A fourth grader in Orange County knows all about finders keepers -- he's now the proud owner of a $30,000 diamond engagement ring.

Daniel Fabris, 9, found the 3-carat sparkler on a playground at Laguna Road Elementary School this past April.

A teacher had the ring appraised by a jeweler and was shocked to discover its $30,000 value.

Daniel decided to turn the ring into authorities and give its rightful owner a chance to claim it.

The princess-cut, platinum ring was kept in a safe located in the Fullerton Police Department far beyond the required 90 days.

Authorities say they followed the California Civil Code in trying to locate the rightful owner.

When no one showed, police and the city attorney decided it was a case of 'finders keepers.'

Daniel picked up his new bling last week. He received praise from authorities for doing the right thing.

Daniel says he does not intend to give the ring to a future bride. Instead, he'd like to put it toward his college education.
