CANOGA PARK -- Police have discovered a pot growing operation right in their own backyard.

The marijuana plants were found on a property just 25 feet from the back door of the LAPD's Topanga Station, authorities said.

The discovery was made during the execution of a search warrant at 8411 Canoga Ave., LAPD officer Gregory Baek said.

He said officers launched an investigation about a week ago after smelling marijuana.

The ventilation in the building had been upgraded and the utility bills were "disproportionately higher," said Officer Karen Rayner of the LAPD's Media Relations Section.

Rayner said the farmers had also "gone to great lengths to filter the air coming out of every hole that might leak to the outside." She said that all the places where the smell might have come had been plugged with liquid caulking.

There were even instructions on the wall for workers.

Three people were arrested as a result of the investigation.

Police suspect there were nearly 1,000 pot plants growing inside the building. The estimated street value was not immediately known.
