DOWNEY, Calif. -- A wayward pony found earlier this month will be adopted by a Riverside County family today.

The stray Shetland Pony named "Big Boy" was found wandering down a street in Norwalk December 3.

Deputies from the sheriff's Norwalk station spotted the tan pony near Studebaker Road and Hayford Street, said Capt. Aaron Reyes of the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority.

Reyes said he figures the fat and happy pony just wandered away from a yard or stable in the city of Norwalk.

SEAACA Officer Robby Gochicoa was sent to corral the animal.

"(He) was a bit skittish at first when I approached, but warmed up to me and let me put the lead rope around (his) neck," Gochicoa said.

Gochicoa transported the pony to SEACCA's animal care center in Downey.

Animal control officials were unable to determine who may have owned the pony.

That's when Joe Sandoval, who has a ranch in Homeland, near Hemet in Riverside County, started making his case for adopting the pony.

"Mr. Sandoval was very diligent in keeping in touch with us, even sending us photos of his property and his animals," Reyes said. "His two daughters, 17 and 13, love horses and begged him to call us to adopt Big Boy," he said.

Reyes said Sandoval's youngest daughter is in a wheelchair.

"I cannot wait to see the look in her eyes when she meets the pony. I hear she's quite the horse charmer," Reyes said.
