NEWPORT BEACH - A 37-year-old high school teacher is accused of giving pot to a minor.
Chad Edward Smith was arrested Thursday after a mother discovered text messages about her 16-year old smoking marijuana with Smith, said Newport Beach police Sgt. Evan Sailor.
Smith, a math teacher at Corona del Mar High School, reportedly met the teenager outside school.
Police believe Smith provided the marijuana and smoked it with the teen at least once.
"Our concern is if he's done this with other students or other minors from other schools," Sailor said.
Smith was placed on paid administrative leave Thursday, according to Laura Boss, a Newport-Mesa Unified School District spokeswoman.
He is free on $50,000 bail.
Investigators siezed a small amount of marijuana and a computer from Smith's Newport Beach home, officials said.
They're now searching through the computer for any evidence that may suggest Smith smoked pot with some of his own students, Newport Beach Police Lt. Craig Fox said.
Anyone with information in the case is asked to contact the Newport Beach Police Department.
