MINNEAPOLIS -- A woman has been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly trying to ship a puppy to another state inside a priority mail box.

Investigators say 39-year old Stacey Champion went to a Minneapolis post office and paid to mail the box to Georgia.

After she left, postal workers noticed the box was moving.

They opened the box and found the 4-month old Schnauzer and poodle mix.

Authorities say the sealed box had no air holes, no food, or water.

They believe the dog would have died if shipped by air in an unpressurized and unheated part of the plane.

Champion is charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty.

She could also face federal charges of trying to ship live animals in the mail.
