RIVERSIDE -- Two dogs were given to animal control officials Thursday night to be euthanized after one of the animals attacked and mauled a 2 year old girl in their home.

Riverside County Dept. of Animal Services officials say the toddler was bitten in the face and head by an un-neutered American bull dog mix. She was taken to a hospital where she is expected to survive her injuries.

The girl was being watched by her grandmother and aunt Wednesday night when the dog attacked the girl, pinning her against a television.

The little girl's aunt was able to pull the dog off the girl.

The dog then bit the aunt in the calf. A second dog at the home, a 5-year-old female Australian shepherd, was believed to be in heat.

The male dog's behavior could have been influenced by the female dog's fertility signals, said animal services Capt. Tammie Belmonte.

The parents signed over the dogs to be euthanized. Officials said neither animal had been sterilized, vaccinated or licensed.
