ROWLAND HEIGHTS (KTLA) -- Firefighters putting out a house fire in Rowland Heights were quite surprised
A fire was reported at a home on the 18000 block of Villa Clara Street around 11 p.m. Monday.
After the smoke cleared, firefighters discovered that the two-story home, which was believed to be vacant, was actually a pot-growing operation.
Several hundred marijuana plants were found in each room of the house and plaster boards were put up on the windows to prevent neighbors from looking inside, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Battalion Chief Joel Harrison.
"It's just a solid bed of green in some of those rooms," Harrison said. "A very large operation."
They had also illegally rewired the home to bypass the home's electrical meter, which may have triggered the fire, Harrison said.
One firefighter reported having heat exhaustion and nausea while battling the blaze. He was transported to a local hospital.
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials are now handling the investigation.
