Brand, age 35, was reportedly in the Delta security area with his fiancee, musical artist Katy Perry. It's unclear whether the couple had just arrived at the airport or if they were leaving on a flight.

The photographer had reportedly been following Brand and Perry around the airport, surrounding them.

The photographer made a citizens arrest when Brand allegedly struck him before LAX police officers could step in, LAPD officials said.

The officers were seen talking to a group of photographers in the terminal after the incident.

Officers reportedly interviewed Brand before taking him into custody, where he was booked for a misdemeanor charge of simple battery with bail set at $20,000, according airport police officials.

Brand was later released Friday on his own recognizance, police said.

Brand is most well known for hosting the MTV Video Music Awards twice and starring in the movies, "Get Him to the Greek" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." He has built a reputation for himself in the UK for his drug-addled past and hedonistic tendencies, for which he went to rehab. Brand is set to star as the titular character in a remake of the movie, "Arthur."

The photographer involved in the altercation was not identified.
